Born in Heredia, Costa Rica.
Bachelor of Plastic Arts, with a specialty in painting, from the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA). Herberth completed postgraduate studies in Textile Design at the University of Textile Engineering and Design in Kyoto Japan; during this time in Japan, Herberth became involved in research and analysis of textile fibers at Gifu Textile Laboratory and studied traditional manual papermaking techniques in the city of Mino. His curious and learning spirit would eventually land him in Spain to undertake studies in Stamping, Introduction to Styling and Art Direction at the Escuela Superior de Diseño y Moda de Barcelona.
Currently, Herberth Bolaños is a distinguished Professor within the Textile Division of the School of Art and Visual Communication at Universidad Nacional (UNA) where he has served as Director. In twenty-six years of academic life at UNA, Herberth Bolaños has exercised professorship in the areas of glass art, environmental design, textile design and module design.
Among the numerous awarded prizes and recognitions are included: Order of the Rising Sun, Golden Rays with Neckband presented by the Government of Japan (2020);
