Sarah Knox

Nickname: Sarah
Country: Scotland - Role: Artist

I am an established Edinburgh artist and love to create evocative watercolours which capture the Scottish landscape using the poetry of dissovling form, ephemeral light and colour.

I have had a strong career including art teaching in prestigious schools and have been gallery teacher for the Fruitmarket Gallery and I continue to teach freelance for the National Galleries of Scotland as well as running masterclasses in watercolour.

I had a critically acclaimed solo exhibition 'Lost worlds' 2021 in the beautiful setting of the Dawyck Botanic Gardens in the Scottish Borders.

In the spring of this year, I had my first solo exhibtion 'There you feel free' at Doubtfire Gallery, Edinburgh with successful sales and was honoured to be part of the cirtically-acclaimed xxxxs://artmag.co.uk/xxxxgallery-edinburgh-2/ Fabriano in Acquerello Scottish group exhibition at the Union Gallery, Edinburgh in 2022.

My practice begins with ‘en plein air’ sketching, making immediate responses through brushwork and colour to capture the sensation of the landscape. My studio is based in the famous Arthur Conan Doyle Centre in Edinburgh's west end and in my attic room I sclae up work on heavy textured watercolour papers to create expressive paintings which explore the theme of sulbime and liminal landscapes.

Pour away the ocean

Soul sea, Sarah Knox watercolour on Fabriano paper 2022 - my painting is inspired by crossing the turbulent waters at the gulf of the Corryvreckan - the famous strait near the Isle of Jura in the inner Hebrides. I aim to capture the light and tidal current

Loch Tay 56 x 38 cm - this painting on Fabriano paper depicts the flurries of wind and cloud over Highland hills. The palette is winter blues, lilacs and greens and atmospheric and full of movement.

Auld Reekie 56 x 38 cm - this painting on Fabriano paper is my favourite view of Edinburgh from the coast. You see Arthur's Seat and the towers and steeples of the Edinburgh skyline. The palette resonates with the cold winter light and a snowflake squall.

Transcendent Venezia - this painting on Fabriano paper describes damp rolling mist over the lagoon. I want the viewer to feel the sensation of that place.

Towards Bamburgh castle from Holy Island. I sketched en plein air on Holy Island, Northumberland. It was a blustery autumn day and the tide was low. My visit was special because you have to cross the causeway at low tide.
