Sandra Schaffer is an American painter. She considers her painting style to be hyperrealistic, with an emphasis on color, texture, detail, movement and the play of light on surfaces. Her primary medium has always been watercolor; she loves its ability to make a painting "glow" in a way similar to the stained glass windows she once designed.
The goal in many of her paintings has been to translate the beautiful colors, textures and forms she found in Indonesia, Nepal, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador into works of art. In another series of works, which she refers to as "Contemporary Classics," she uses classic cars to reflect the culture of their surroundings. These cars then both reflect a story, and become a vehicle for a story. Other subjects she finds interesting are unusual ways of looking at familiar objects. In all instances she strives to create clean color glazes that create vibrant effects, as well as creating the illusion of dimension, depth and intensity on a two dimensional surface.
During her painting career, Sandra has at one time earned signature membership in 22 state/national watercolor societies. She is currently a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, among others, and is a Master Signature Member of California Watercolor Society. She is past president of Watercolor USA Honor Society and has served as a juror for a number of national exhibitions. Internationally, she exhibited work in the Japan/USA Exchange Show, the Korean/Japan/USA Exchange Show and for two years was an American participant in the Fabriano Aquarelle Invitational. Her work has been published in a number of Splash Watercolor publications, as well as in Best of America Watercolor Artists and Best of Worldwide Watermedia Artists.
