My relationship with the people I have to look in the eye when I paint is very interesting. I cannot look people in the eye when I speak to them. I look through them, beyond them. I’ve been told that this is a sign of insincerity. However, I attribute it to the fact that I am a shy person. But when I paint… It is a wonderful, unsettling thing… Every time, I realize how great God is through what He has created. When I observe the features of faces, not only the eyes, everything… And I try to capture what animates these features, what is beyond matter… the soul. If you only knew what it means to look closely into the eyes of someone you're painting... How many things you can guess in that gaze… How unsettling it is… It’s as if you were looking – to discover unsaid secrets – through the keyhole. My interest in the theme of representations on various surfaces (paper, cardboard, canvas), using different techniques (oil paints, watercolors, ink, pastels, pencil, charcoal) covers a rather wide palette. I don’t settle on a specific subject, to repeat it endlessly in various versions. I like challenges and, as much as possible, I try not to repeat myself. I always strive to work in a different technique. |
