The watercolors of Jane Fritz focus on landscapes, wildlife, and wildflowers to share her sense of peace and awe when in the wilderness. Jane’s larger goal for her art is to foster an appreciation for wilderness that encourages people to work toward preservation of the ecosystems that sustain biodiversity.
Jane’s art has been featured in an 8-page article in Watercolor Artist magazine in 2025, three feature articles in Art of Watercolour Magazine in 2023-24, has been recognized in The Artist’s Magazine and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and has earned several awards in The Art of Watercolour Magazine, including first, second and third place awards. She won Third Place Overall in the October 2024 PleinAir Salon Art competition and was a Top 40 Finalist in the 14th Annual PleinAir Salon Art competition. Her paintings were awarded Outstanding Watercolor in the Boldbrush Competition in September 2023, June 2024 and August 2024. She has won numerous awards in various juried national and international exhibits and is a Signature Member of Alabama Watercolor Society (Silver), New Mexico Watercolor Society, Western Colorado Watercolor Society, Montana Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and the Watercolor USA Honor Society. Her artwork can be seen in public and private collections in several countries.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Jane received a BS in Chemistry from Michigan State University, an MA in Environmental Studies and an MS in Botany from the University of Montana. While pursuing employment along with her husband as a high school science teacher, mostly at international schools in eastern Asia and South America, Jane never abandoned her childhood love for drawing and painting. She became hooked on watercolors as the medium of choice for journals to document her broad international travels. She further developed her watercolor skills through university courses and workshops with master painters, but she is largely self-taught through hours of dedication and devotion to her art. Her extensive national and world travels have inspired her and provided subject matter for much of her artwork.
Artist Statement
My inspiration comes from whatever makes my heart sing. My passions are wilderness landscapes, wild flowers and wildlife, but I also am fascinated by people of traditional cultures who I encounter during my travels. My aim is to portray a special place far removed from everyday life. A pathway of shadows or other guiding lines leads the viewers’ attention to a luminous focal area with the most detail and contrast. This center of interest beckons the observers into the painting, and entices them to examine the details or to imagine what lies beyond the horizon. My hope is that my work will help foster an appreciation for wilderness and nature that encourages people to work toward preservation of the ecosystems that sustain biodiversity.
