Believing firmly in the importance of sharing knowledge, Jessica enjoys teaching the challenges of watercolor and composition, helping others develop their own unique voice and approach. She offers in-person workshops and teaches online through Artefacto School, Terracotta, the World of Watercolor, and Watercolor Live.

An early love of landscape was initiated by the sights and sounds of the undeveloped field below her childhood window, and cultivated by time spent exploring family farmlands in Minnesota and Iowa. As a child, she loved watching storms roll across the plains, listening to meadowlarks, smelling manure, and laying in the grass at night while the milky way lit the sky. Road trips sparked a desire to discover what lay beyond the horizon – to start walking and just keep going and going.

Jessica’s work primarily focuses on the landscapes she has explored and lived in throughout the American West. Her degree in American Studies and insatiable curiosity drive her to contextualize a sense of place within the histories of culture and geology. Landscape presents unending opportunity for exploring the complexity of experience through analogy and metaphor.

Having served eight terms as Artist-in-Residence for the National Park Service, living and working in a variety of parks, Jessica has had opportunities to explore remote wilderness and work with wildlife, including helping with a bison roundup. Parks served include: Badlands, Rocky Mountain, Joshua Tree, and the Western Arctic National Parklands above the Arctic Circle in Alaska.
