I am from a self-taught Watercolourist, painting mostly landscapes but, at times, also ventures in the realms of still-life, abstract, imaginary representation as well as portraits.
As an Art student at secondary level, I was inspired by my art teachers into the magic of transparent Watercolour. In my early exploration of drawing and painting, I tried different mediums like Watercolour, Gouache, Oil, Acrylic, Pastels and Ink but was ultimately submerged with transparent watercolour when I embarked in landscape painting four years ago.
I am a member of IWS Mauritius and Save Art. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, I try to seduce the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Influenced by my profession, that of a Sociology Educator, moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life and at times, disconcerting beauty emerges.
By emphasising aesthetics, I also investigate the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. My works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver, all wrapped up in Watercolour.
I have participated in several exhibitions locally and internationally both juried and invitational. My painting ‘Pirogues’ was selected by the jury of IWS India for the Exhibition in the category of Geniuses of Watercolour(India) and ‘Port-Louis’ in the category Olympiart(India).
