About me

INTRO

Edwing Leonardo Alvarez (b.1964) in Dominican Republic, Italian citizen, and a United Kingdom-based architect, project manager, and painter whose artistic practice runs parallel to - and often beyond - the realm of architecture. Working fluidly between disciplines, allows to approach, he approaches painting as a medium of immediacy and intuition, valued for its transparency, movement, and capacity to capture atmosphere, memory, and place. Painting serves as his primary tool for visual storytelling, translating spatial experience and investment narratives into expressive form.

Art has accompanied Edwing througout his life and career, functioning not only as a personal discipline but as the driving force behind his sustained engagement with the arts. His early involvement in competitions led to formal studies in both artt and architecture, earning a Bachelor of Arts and Architecture from the University of Texas. He later received a full scholarship through an artistic closed competition to Pratt Institute in New York City, where he completed a BAchelor of Architectural Science and a Master of Architecture.

Alongside his artistic practice, Edwing holds the position of Senior Director at an international firm, specializing in mixed-used development across the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.  His paintings reflect this global experience, bridging built environments and emotional landscapes, and positioning art as a narrative instrument that connects place, vision, and value.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are meditations of the intesections of place, memory, and structure, tracing the pasage of time. Painting moves me emotionally, capturing moments linked to a particular point in life through various media, most extensively watercolor and acrylic.  Each work tells the story of a life lived across multiple cultures and build environments, reflecting experiences that have shaped me from an early age. Seascapes and urban landscapes lie at the heart of my practice, serving as both subject and framework for visual storytelling.

With a passionate background in architecture, I approach composition through spatial relationships, proportion, and rhythm. Buildings, streets, and coastal forms are not merely depicted - they are interpreted as layers of memory, experience, and atmosphere.  Watercolor allows me to convey light, movement, and the ephemeral qualities of a scene, while relying on structure, depth, and contract, embodying the balance between intuitive gesture and purposeful design.

Having lived and worked across the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, my work is informed by a multicultural perspective that embraces both local and specificity and universal emotion.  Through fluid washes, layered marks, and dynamic compositions, I tarnslate architectural and environmental experience into expressive imagery, inviging viewers to enter landscapes where the built and natural worlds converge - and to discover their own intimate connection to memory, culture, and imagination.
