Krista grew up in Midwest America. Her ability to draw was recognized at a young age. As a young teenager, she enrolled in private art lessons. Throughout high school and college, she studied drawing, painting, and design, along with teacher education classes. She earned her MS in Education and taught students of all ages from kindergarten to high school 2006-2020. While raising a family and teaching, she continued to explore fiber arts, ceramics, oil and watercolor painting.
Krista moved to California in 2020 and devoted herself to her full-time career as a professional artist with her current focus on watercolor.
As a contemporary realist, Krista creates dramatic contrast in her still life and nature paintings using design principles to build a connection to viewers. She is motivated by the living quality of watercolor and the play of light and shadows on in everyday subjects adding movement to her paintings. Drawn to the luminosity and challenge of watercolor, she finds it exciting to share her vision through this medium.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always admired the living quality of watercolor and its simplicity of water and paper. However, good watercolor artistry is anything but simple to achieve. I draw and paint because it brings me serenity and accomplishment. My current work is focused on watercolor still life. I paint what catches my attention with light and color and elicits emotion within me. I am focused on artistic growth with powerful compositions. I am a contemporary realist painter. I like the challenge of communicating what I see in life and translating it onto a two-dimensional surface. Watercolor allows me to create a living art form that emanates from the fibers of the paper. Painting gives me joy that I want to share with others and inspires me to strive for new skills as I take on greater artistic challenges.
